Undefeated IBF Super Middleweight Champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (18-0, 10KOs) will face off against Mike “White Bear” Lee (21-0, 11KOs) on Saturday, July 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. The fight will be the co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39KOs) versus Keith Thurman (29-0, 22KOs) card.
Caleb Plant thoroughly defeated Jose Uzcategui (28-3, 23KOs) in January to become the IBF Super Middleweight Champ. A lot of people questioned if Plant could take Uzcategui’s power, and if he could hang with him. Not only did he hang with him, but he put on a boxing clinic, hurting Uzcategui multiple times during the fight. In fact, he dropped Uzcategui twice early in the fight. It was a very impressive showing, and Plant answered all the questions we had about him being for real or not. He’s very technical, quick, has a high boxing iQ, knows what angles to use, and has very good timing. If he were a little bigger, I’d say without a doubt that he could unify the entire division. That’s not saying he can’t still do that though. He’s extremely talented, and has a style that boxing purists can fall in love with.
Mike Lee has been a fringe contender at light heavyweight, but is coming down in weight for his first title opportunity. It’s always tough coming down in weight. Boxing fans will always look at that fighter’s endurance going into the mid to late rounds. Lee has never fought anyone of Plant’s caliber. Lee is strong, he has pretty good footwork and is crafty enough. Early in the fight he might win a couple rounds, but outside of that I see him gassing out in the mid to late rounds. I don’t know if Plant has the power to put him away but it’s going to be all Plant, all night. Complete domination. If it went any other way, I would truly be shocked.
Both fighters faced off at the final press conference and things got little chippy. Harsh words were exchanged and the fighters had to be separated before things went any further. Caleb Plant has clearly gotten under Mike Lee’s skin. Could it play a role in the fight? We all know Plant is a heavy favorite. He seems focused and confident.
Caleb Plant is developing into a star in the boxing game. He just got this belt, and there is no way he’s going to lose it to someone of Mike Lee’s caliber. It’s just not going to happen. Mike Lee is a strong guy, a big guy, but he’s not particularly great at one thing. Plant is special. He will be too slick and too technical for Lee. I predict him overwhelming Lee with counters upstairs and downstairs, timing him from the early rounds. He may even score a late round TKO. That’s one question Plant needs to answer for EightCount.TV. If Lee gasses, will Plant put the pedal to the metal and go for the KO? Will Mike Lee just try to survive, making the KO more difficult? I hope not.
My prediction: Caleb Plant UD (dominating UD).
