Who is next for Gennady Golovkin?

Gennady Golovkin (39-1, 35KOs) was back in full force yesterday when he knocked out Steve Rolls (19-1, 10KOs) in the fourth round. It was definitely a tune-up fight for Golovkin that was meant to showcase his skill in his DAZN debut. Now with that fight out of the way, who should be next for the Kazakh slugger? Let’s see.

3. Danny Jacobs

Danny Jacobs (35-3, 29KOs) recently announced a move to 168 pounds but a rematch with Golovkin would surely be a big enough fight to halt that move. Jacobs suffered a narrow loss to Golovkin in 2017 and with both fighters signed to DAZN, a rematch would be a very easy fight to make. Both fighters also have decision losses to middleweight king Canelo Alvarez, and a rematch could serve as a number one contender fight where the winner gets an opportunity to avenge their loss.

2. Demetrius Andrade

Demetrius Andrade (27-0, 17KOs) is currently the WBO middleweight champion of the world , thus a fight with him would give Golovkin an opportunity to capture another world title before chasing a third fight with Canelo. Alvarez has previously said he would entertain a third fight with Golovkin if the Kazakh could capture another title. Like Jacobs, Demetrius Andrade is also signed to DAZN which should make a fight between him and Golovkin easy to make. It would be a very interesting fight, however I wouldn’t bank on it happening next.

1. Saul Alvarez

Honestly speaking, a fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (52-1-2, 35KOs) is the only fight that makes sense to be next for Gennady Golovkin and its most likely to occur in September. DAZN knows this particular fight would receive the most interest by far and will surely push onto making it happen. And very few people would complain. Both fighters have fought twice in the past with the first fight being ruled a highly controversial draw (most pundits saw a clear Golovkin victory), and with the second fight being ruled in favor of Canelo. Regardless of who you think one, both fights were very competitive and a third fight would capture the sports world’s attention yet again. This is far and away the likeliest fight to occur next so look for Canelo-Golovkin III to happen sometime in September.
