Fight Preview: Tevin Farmer vs Jono Carroll

IBF Junior Lightweight champ Tevin Farmer (28-4-1, 6KOs) will take on undefeated contender, Jono Carroll (16-0-1, 3KOs) at the Liacouras Center, Philadelphia on Friday March 15th. They will finally settle their ongoing Twitter beef! No more trash talking. Let’s fight!

The champion, Tevin Farmer, hopes to continue his unbelievable career comeback. Early on, Farmer suffered 4 losses in his first 12 fights, with one loss coming by TKO and another fight resulting a draw. Since then he’s been on a 20 fight win streak, relying on his slick boxing skills, and tremendous hand speed. He’s coming off a unanimous decision win over Francisco Fonseca (23-2-1 17KOs) after completely outclassing him.

Jono Carroll is undefeated, but is not in the same class as Tevin Farmer. Their Twitter beef really heated up when the IBF ordered an eliminator between Carroll and #3 ranked contender Guillaume Frenois (46-1-1, 12KOs) and to fans of Carroll’s delight he pulled out a split draw, which in many peoples eyes was a gift. Carrol took control in the early rounds but faded in the middle rounds. He just didn’t look sharp or impressive after the 5th and 6th rounds. Maybe it was just an off night and a fluke, but even at his best, Jono will have problems with the ultra slick Tevin Farmer.

His split draw against Frenois was good for business. A loss would have doomed a potential fight with Farmer, which is a very sellable fight. It is St Patrick’s Day weekend, both guys dislike each other, Carroll is a native of Ireland, and Farmer is from Philadelphia. I could see it being a mixed crowd, especially with women’s unified lightweight champ Katie Taylor (also Irish) fighting on the card.

Fight Prediction:

I expect Farmer to take care of business. Neither man has much power so expect this to go to the judges’ scorecards. If Carroll has any chance, he will have to fight the best fight of his career, and outbox Farmer.

Tevin Farmer might be the best at 130lbs, with only Gervonta “Tank” Davis (21-0, 20KOs) being his only legitimate competition. That is a future clash everyone would love to see. For now this will have to do, and since there’s bad blood between Farmer and Carroll, it should make for a decent fight early on until Farmer figures out his opponent. My prediction for the fight is Tevin Farmer for the win by a wide unanimous decision.
