Demetrius Andrade vs Artur Akavov This Friday on DAZN

Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (26-0, 16KOs) is back in action tomorrow night in New York. He’ll be defending his newly won WBO world title against Artur Akavov (19-2, 8KOs) in the Madison Square Gaden Theater. The fight will be streamed exclusively on DAZN with an event start time of 7PM/ET.

Andrade’s name has been mentioned among the best middleweights in the division. Everyone seems to agree that Andrade is a force at 160 pounds. Unfortunately, inactivity has plagued the new champion. He only fought once each year in 2014, 2015, and 2016. He picked up the pace in 2017 fighting two times while closing out 2018 with just one fight. This Friday he’ll be making his return to the ring in just under three months since his last fight. That should be a good sign for boxing fans and those wanting to see more of Andrade.

Andrade was supposed to challenge Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO title this past October but Saunders tested positive for a banned substance. As a result he was stripped of the title and Andrade fought late replacement (name). He scored a unanimous decision win to become the new WBO middleweight champion. Now that he’s got some hardware we’ll hopefully see the new champion fight more often. Potential fights against the likes of Canelo, Golovkin, and Jacobs are all intriguing bouts. But he has to get through Akavov first.

Artur Akavov comes into the fight with a record of 19 wins and 2 losses. Eight of those victories have come by way of knockout which gives him a 38% knockout ratio. He’s ranked 31 in the BoxRec middleweight rankings and will be facing his stiffest challenge to date. This is clearly meant to be a stay busy fight for Andrade but no fighter should be overlooked. Akavov recognizes this is the biggest fight of his career and will come in looking to prove a point.

It’s unlikely that Akavov pulls off the upset but Andrade will benefit from a focused and determined opponent. He’ll stay busy and remain sharp. If he wins as expected it sets him up for bigger fights in the future. With a world title in his possession he’ll come into negotiations with bargaining power. Potential showdowns with the best in the division are all possible if he wins and looks impressive tomorrow night.
