Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner Is Important for Both Fighters
Manny Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39KOs) vs Adrien Broner (33-3-1, 24KOs) takes place on January 19 on Showtime PPV. This fight is going to be interesting to watch because it’ll let the public know what’s left in both fighters. Pacquiao is 40 years old and is in the twilight of an illustrious career. His opponent Adrien Broner is a former four division world champion and eleven years younger but his career has been tainted by lack of focus and discipline. This is an important fight for both men. Whatever happens inside the ring will be an indicator of how much they have left.
Pacquiao’s Last Fight Left Unanswered Questions
The great Manny Pacquiao is back on Showtime PPV and will be competing in the United States for the first time since 2016. In his last fight he scored his first knockout in nearly a decade. He dominated the Argentine slugger, Lucas Matthysse. But although Pacquiao looked sharp and fast it didn’t give us a good idea of how much he has left. Throughout most of his career Matthysse was known as a knockout artist. His nickname “La Maquina” (translated “The Machine) rightly described his relentless approach. But against Manny Pacquiao he looked like a shell of his former self.
After the fight they asked Matthysse, “What happened?” His answer was simple. He was in the ring with Manny Pacquiao. Perhaps there was a bit of intimidation by the simple fact of sharing the ring with a legend. But I don’t think that was the main factor. The Argentine slugger was already showing signs of deterioration in his last outing when he scored a lackluster knockout over a lesser opponent.
Will “The Problem” Show Up?
Adrien Broner has captured belts in four separate weight divisions. On his best night he’s a solid defensive fighter who can put together great combinations. But against marquee opponents the fighter known as “The Problem” has rarely presented any problems. He’s lost fights against Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter, and Mikey Garcia. Broner doesn’t let his hands go against marquee opponents and it’s cost him dearly. Versus Manny Pacquiao, however, he has an opportunity to show fans that he can still be a problem in boxing.
Both men should come in highly prepared because of what’s at stake. Because of this we can expect a competitive fight. Pacquiao is 40 years old but if he looks like he did against Matthysse against a competitive Adrien Broner, he’ll prove that he can still compete at a world class level. Broner on the other hand desperately needs a win to remain relevant. If he defeats Pacquiao his stock will surely rise and he’ll open the doors for bigger fights. Come fight night fans will get a good indicator of what’s left of Manny Pacquiao and Adrien Broner.
