Once Stars, Now The Fallen Fighters at Welterweight

Once champions in the division but now all coming off loses, what’s next for the likes of Danny Garcia, Amir Khan and Kell Brook?

Garcia inactive since his loss earlier this year to Keith Thurman has been less vocal than usual, as has his dad, Angel, which was very rare before. What’s next in line for the fallen champion who in everyones’ opinion felt that he has been on the lucky side in a few of his bouts?

Amir Khan, the British superstar has been inactive since his sixth round KO at the hands of Canelo Alavarez. A fight with Manny Pacquiao was ambitious and failed to materialize and constant negotiations with Kell Brook have not yielded anything.

Kell Brook on the other hand is coming off of back-to-back losses against Gemma’s “GGG” Golovkin and Errol Spence, in which he suffered facial bone damage in both fights. Is Kell really the “Special One” or has he been bitten off more than he can chew in his last two fights which could explain his success against the the weaker caliber of opponents he faced previously.

We take a look at what could possibly be next for each of these fighters and the fights that can help revitalize their careers.

Danny Garcia vs. Amir Khan
A personal favorite fight of mine. In their first fight, I felt that Khan was winning, however, his lack of concentration ultimately cost him the victory and resulted in the rise of Danny Garcia’s career. A rematch would make sense from a business perspective and both have strong fan bases, thus potentially drawing decent TV ratings as well.

Danny Garcia vs. Shawn Porter

Porter, who is coming off a spectacular win against Andre Berto, is the main contender for Keith Thurman’s title but I’m not so sure a lot of fans would want to see that rematch. Porter is too brash and many believe he doesn’t have the skillset to be a top contender. A fight with Garcia would be good for both and put the winner in the driver’s seat to fight Keith Thurman.

Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook

This fight has been talked about for a few years now. Many believe Khan was holding out for bigger fights but this fight makes sense now especially after both fighters lost their most recent bouts. The U.K. has been asking for this fight for a while and it would be sure to draw a big crowd. This fight makes a lot of sense now.

Amir Khan vs. Manny Pacquiao

Apparently this fight was agreed to earlier this year but the investors in Dubai failed to put money down for it. This would get Pacquiao his next big payday and be a good fight for Khan to climb back up the welterweight ranks given Pacquiao’s decline. Kahn should win this fight now given his speed and skillset but let’s hope this fight gets made at some point this year.

Kell Brook vs. Danny Garcia

This would be a great fight. Two solid fighters going at it, but I doubt their promoters will make the fight happen given the risk involved if their fighter were to lose.
